Musical Theater — Program Overview
What we focus on
  • The “triple threat”: acting, singing, and dancing
  • Character development, stage presence, and ensemble etiquette
  • Vocal technique for theater: breath, placement, diction, lyric interpretation
  • Dance vocabulary used on Broadway (jazz, tap, ballet foundations) and choreography pickup
  • Audition readiness: material selection, cuts (16–32 bars), and confidence
How it works
  • Each class blends vocal warm-ups, acting exercises, and a dance combo from MT repertoire
  • Blocking, timing, partner work, and basics of stagecraft (lighting, sound, props)
  • Supportive feedback that builds confidence and performance polish
  • Periodic in-class sharings; showcase opportunities as scheduled
You’ll learn
  • Authentic character choices and clear objectives
  • Vocal skills for projection, phrasing, and storytelling
  • Clean lines, musical timing, and stylistic range in movement
  • Audition skills (slating, cuts, resume tips), quick-pickup choreography, and rehearsal etiquette
  • Collaborative process with directors, choreographers, and music directors

Musical Theater 1-3 (ages 6-12)

Musical Theater 1–3 — Ages 6–12 (Introductory)
This beginner-friendly class builds a strong foundation in singing, dancing, and spoken dialogue while boosting confidence in a supportive, inclusive room.


What we focus on
  • Acting basics: character, emotion, stage presence, ensemble etiquette
  • Vocal skills: breath support, pitch matching, diction, lyric storytelling
  • Dance for MT: jazz/tap foundations and picking up simple choreography
  • Performance habits: blocking, timing, and working with partners
How it works
  • Each class includes vocal warm-ups, acting games/scene work, and a short dance combo from musical theater repertoire
  • Clear demonstrations, level-appropriate pacing, and positive feedback
  • Occasional in-class sharings; showcase opportunities as scheduled
You’ll learn
  • Projection, phrasing, and clear lyrics
  • Basic jazz/tap vocabulary and musical timing
  • Confidence onstage, teamwork, and rehearsal etiquette
Recommendations
  • Able to focus for a one-hour class
  • Practice 10–15 minutes at home, 2–3 times per week (lyrics/lines/steps)
  • Arrive a few minutes early, bring water, and be ready to participate
Requirements
  • Attire: class-appropriate movement clothing; hair off the face
  • Footwear: jazz shoes (clean, non-marking sneakers acceptable for beginners); tap shoes when assigned
  • Bring a folder/notebook for lyrics/sides when provided

Musical Theater 4/5 (ages 12+)

Musical Theater 4–5 — Ages 12+ (Advanced)
An advanced class that deepens all three pillars acting, singing, and dance—with added focus on improv, audition preparation, stagecraft, and technical theater.


What we focus on
  • Acting through song: text analysis, objectives, subtext, and authentic choices
  • Vocal technique: breath support, placement, diction, phrasing, and storytelling
  • Dance for MT: faster pickup, style versatility, and performance quality
  • Audition craft: slating, 16–32 bar cuts, monologue work, and mock auditions
  • Stagecraft/tech: blocking, cueing, mic etiquette, sightlines, props, and ensemble etiquette
How it works
  • Each class blends vocal warm-ups, acting exercises/improv, and a dance combo from classic and contemporary repertoire
  • Periodic audition labs and in-class sharings; collaboration with scene partners and small groups
  • Clear demonstrations, targeted feedback, and a professional rehearsal atmosphere
You’ll build
  • Stronger musical phrasing, character specificity, and onstage confidence
  • Faster choreography retention and cleaner transitions
  • Professional habits: preparedness, collaboration, and leadership in an ensemble
Placement & recommendations
  • Experience: 2–3 years of prior musical theater or equivalent training recommended
  • Training plan: Take this one-hour class weekly plus at least one weekly technique class (ballet, jazz, or hip-hop)

Adult Musical Theater (ages 15+)

Adult Musical Theater — Ages 15+ (Open Level)
An open-level class that blends acting, singing, and dance to build technique, musicality, and performance confidence—plus light audition prep (16–32-bar cuts, slating) in a supportive, zero-pressure room.


What we focus on
  • The “triple threat”: acting, singing, and dance fundamentals
  • Audition preparation (16–32 bar cuts, slating, basic resume tips)
  • Confidence, stage presence, and ensemble etiquette
How it works
  • Each class blends vocal warm-ups, acting exercises, and a short dance combo
  • Clear options for beginners and added challenges for experienced performers
  • Occasional mock-auditions and in-class sharings
What you’ll build
  • Vocal technique (breath, placement, diction) and lyric storytelling
  • Choreography pickup, musical timing, and performance quality
  • A small audition toolkit (song cut, slate, and audition etiquette)
Notes
  • Open level: progress at your own pace
  • Attire/footwear: movement-friendly clothing; jazz shoes recommended (tap shoes when assigned)
  • Bring a water bottle and a folder/notebook for lyrics/sides

Join the Alamo City Stage Company Performance Troupe!

Now accepting students ages 5-18 for our new Performance Troupe, focusing on all aspects of stage performance: singing, dancing, acting, tech, makeup, and costuming!

Learn from San Antonio’s Industry Professionals!
Our instructors are masters in their fields with years of experience on and off the stage.

 Class Schedule:
- Thursdays: 6:00-7:00 PM(Ages 5-8)
- Saturdays: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM(Ages 9+)

 Tuition:
- $100 per month
- $80 for each additional child in the same family
