We welcome passionate, committed dancers ages 3 and up—no prior dance experience required.
Our program develops skills in Mexican folklórico including footwork, skirt work, and full-body coordination—paired with cultural education and interpretation to form well-rounded performers.
Beyond technique, students grow in teamwork, discipline, and collaboration in a nurturing, supportive, and inclusive environment, building confidence and a deep appreciation for the Hispanic heritage that enriches our community.


Pre-Folklórico — Ages 3–5 (Movement Basics, Independent-Level)

Pre-Folklórico — Ages 3–5 (Movement Basics, Independent-Level)
Play-based intro to folklórico: coordination, rhythm, simple zapateado, and age-friendly faldeo/braceo.


What we focus on
  • Coordination, rhythm, and musicality
  • Foundational footwork (zapateado basics: toe–heel, stamps)
  • Skirt/arm pathways (faldeo & braceo) scaled for age
  • Listening skills: steady beat, simple palmas (handclaps)
  • Creative movement and classroom etiquette
How it works
  • Playful warm-up and coordination games
  • Short across-the-floor patterns and tiny combos
  • About ½–¾ of class in ballet slippers or socks, then switch to folklórico shoes (teacher cues the change)
  • Upbeat music and props to keep learning fun and age-appropriate
Requirements
  • Potty-trained and able to attend a one-hour class without a parent
  • Attire: black shirt or leotard; black bike shorts, tights, or leggings; hair pulled away from the face
  • Footwear: ballet slippers or clean socks (movement segment); white folklórico shoes (folklórico segment)
  • Optional: lightweight practice skirt (teacher will advise)

Folklórico 1 — Ages 5–7 (Introductory Level)

Foundations in rhythm, zapateado basics, and beginning skirt/arm work with fun, cultural context.


What we focus on
  • Rhythm and body coordination
  • Foundational footwork (zapateado basics: toe–heel, stamps)
  • Skirt work (faldeo) and arm carriage (braceo)
  • Musicality: steady beat, simple palmas (handclaps), listening and response
  • Cultural context: age-appropriate intros to regions/music
How it works
  • Playful warm-up and coordination games
  • Short across-the-floor patterns and simple combinations
  • Clear teacher demos; upbeat music; positive, encouraging pace
Requirements
  • Uniform: black shirt or leotard; black bike shorts, tights, or leggings
  • Hair: pulled away from the face
  • Skirt & shoes (female dancers): black folklórico skirt at mid-calf with a single ruffle and green accents; white folklórico shoes

Folklórico 2–3 — Ages 8–12 (Developing Levels)

Build clarity and stamina in zapateado, musical timing (compás/palmas), formations, and regional stylizations.


What we focus on
  • Rhythm, body coordination, and clean folklórico footwork (zapateado)
  • Skirt work (faldeo) and arm carriage (braceo) with clearer pathways and accents
  • Musicality: counting, steady compás, basic palmas (handclaps)
  • Regional stylizations (e.g., Jalisco, Veracruz) and brief historical context
  • Ensemble skills: spacing, facings, formations, and stage etiquette
How it works
  • Structured warm-up with footwork drills and coordination exercises
  • Across-the-floor patterns and short combinations at building tempos
  • Choreography that reinforces technique and performance quality
  • Positive, supportive pacing with clear demonstrations and corrections
Requirements
  • Uniform: black shirt or leotard; black bike shorts, tights, or leggings
  • Hair: pulled away from the face
  • Skirt & shoes (female dancers): black folklórico skirt at mid-calf with a single ruffle and yellow accents; white folklórico shoes

Folklórico 3–4 — Ages 10–14 (Intermediate, by placement)

Precision faldeo/braceo, accented footwork (e.g., doble, paso de tres), unison work, and stage etiquette.

What we focus on
  • Body control and precise skirt work (faldeo) with coordinated arm carriage (braceo)
  • Clear, accented zapateado (e.g., doble, paso de tres, carretilla, borracho, huachapeado)
  • Musicality: steady compás, counting, and palmas; clean transitions and phrasing
  • Ensemble skills: unison, formations, facings, spacing, and stage etiquette
  • Cultural context: regional stylizations and brief historical background
How it works
  • Structured warm-up with footwork drills and skirt pathways
  • Across-the-floor patterns at building tempi, plus short and medium combinations
  • Choreography that emphasizes clarity, endurance, and group precision
  • Supportive coaching with clear demonstrations and corrections
Requirements
  • Placement by the Folklórico Program Director; dancers should demonstrate rhythm/body coordination and execute basic footwork (doble, paso de tres, carretilla, borracho, huachapeado)
  • Uniform: black shirt or leotard; black bike shorts, tights, or leggings; hair pulled away from the face
  • Skirt & shoes (female dancers): black folklórico skirt at ankle length with a single ruffle and yellow accents; white folklórico shoes

Folklórico 5 — Ages 12+ (Advanced, by placement)

Performance-ready technique: crisp accents, partnering, repertoire retention, and polished projection for stage and competition.

What we focus on

  • Advanced technique: crisp zapateado, accents, stamina, and precision
  • Skirt work combinations: sencillo, doble, mariposa, vuelta de plato; facings, pathways, clean endings
  • Partnering: timing, spacing, handholds/etiquette, coordinated entrances/exits
  • Choreography retention: longer sections, transitions, and musical structure (llamadas/cierres, tempo changes)
  • Performance readiness: unison blend, interpretation, projection, and stage presence
How it works
  • Structured warm-up with footwork drills and skirt pathways
  • Partnering exercises, formations, and directional changes at performance tempi
  • Repertory rehearsals that emphasize clarity, endurance, and consistent musicality
  • Supportive coaching with precise demonstrations, corrections, and cleanup
Requirements
  • Placement by the Folklórico Program Director; must demonstrate full-body control and execute basic skirt work (sencillo, doble, mariposa, vuelta de plato)
  • Uniform: black shirt or leotard; black bike shorts, tights, or leggings; hair pulled away from the face
  • Skirt & shoes (female dancers): black folklórico skirt at ankle length with a single ruffle and red accents; white folklórico shoes

Teen/Adult Folklórico — Ages 15+ (Open Level)

What we focus on
  • Joyful zapateado (footwork), clear rhythms, and musical confidence
  • Faldeo (skirt work) and braceo (arms/hands); hat handling as appropriate
  • Short, expressive combinations inspired by regional styles (e.g., Jalisco, Veracruz)
  • Cultural context—history, symbolism, and etiquette that inform the movement
  • Ensemble skills: spacing, facings, unison, and performance presence
How it works
  • Truly open level: options for newcomers and challenges for experienced dancers
  • Warm, supportive pacing with clear demos and upbeat music
  • Skirt/hat work introduced progressively; no partner required
  • Occasional opportunities to perform (always optional)
Requirements
  • Attire: black shirt or leotard; black bike shorts, tights, or leggings; hair secured off the face
  • Footwear: folklórico shoes/boots; practice skirt recommended (instructor will advise on specifics)
  • All levels welcome—no prior folklórico experience required
You may also have the opportunity to wear vibrant traditional costumes that bring authenticity and beauty to Folklórico performances. Explore your artistic side as you interpret stories through dance and discover the form’s emotional depth. As you progress, you may choose to showcase your skills in local performances, sharing the joy of Folklórico with the community.

Performance and Competition Company

Alamo City Ballet Folklórico is a professional performance company devoted to the preservation and evolution of Mexican folklórico. Under the direction of the Company Artistic Director, dancers (ages 13+, by placement) refine advanced technique crisp zapateado, expressive faldeo and braceo, rhythmic clarity, and unison blend while building the stage presence and musicality required for concerts, festivals, community events, and select competitions. Repertoire draws from diverse regional traditions and may incorporate partnering, formations, and props to tell vibrant cultural stories. Company members commit to rigorous rehearsals and ongoing technique classes, upholding high standards of artistry, professionalism, and cultural integrity.
