Modern

Modern

Picture
Modern dance is an expressive, contemporary-rooted form that favors natural movement, breath, and weight over rigid shapes. Drawing on techniques such as contraction/release, floorwork, and dynamic shifts in level and tempo, it develops strength, mobility, and musicality while encouraging improvisation and personal voice. The result is versatile, human storytelling in motion—welcoming to newcomers and inspiring for experienced movers.

Modern 1–3 — Ages 6–12 (Beginner/Intermediate)

Modern 1–3 — Ages 6–12 (Beginner/Intermediate)
A creativity-forward class that builds a strong foundation in expressive movement while introducing core modern/contemporary technique.

What we focus on
  • Expressive movement, creativity, and performance confidence
  • Fundamentals: breath, weight, contraction/release, safe floorwork, and level changes
  • Musicality, spatial awareness, and ensemble etiquette
How it works
  • Warm-up (floor → standing) for alignment, core support, and mobility
  • Across-the-floor phrases exploring pathways, direction, and dynamics
  • Guided improvisation and collaborative mini–choreography projects
  • Short, age-appropriate combinations that link technique to storytelling
You’ll learn
  • Clean transitions to/from the floor; balanced shapes and pathways
  • Basic modern/contemporary vocabulary (rolls, swings, reaches, turns, sustained vs. sharp dynamics)
  • Teamwork and rehearsal habits through group creation and sharing
Recommendations
  • Attend one ballet class per week regularly
  • Uniform: correct class attire; hair off the face
  • Able to focus for a one-hour class

Modern 4–5 — Ages 12+ (Intermediate/Advanced)

Modern 4–5 — Ages 12+ (Intermediate/Advanced)
A dynamic class for seasoned dancers that blends advanced modern technique with contemporary and jazz elements. Refine fluidity, control, and musicality while creating original work through collaborative choreography.

What we focus on

  • Advanced modern technique: release & fall–recovery, off-center work, floorwork progressions, inversions, and momentum-based travel
  • Contemporary vocabulary: turns, lines, leaps adapted to a contemporary aesthetic; texture and dynamic range
  • Composition & creativity: motif development, accumulation, retrograde, canon, and structured improvisation
  • Performance skills: phrasing, expression, presence, and ensemble cohesion
How it works
  • Warm-up (floor → standing) for alignment, core support, mobility, and strength
  • Across-the-floor patterns with level changes, direction shifts, and weight transfers
  • Longer combinations that challenge clarity, stamina, and pickup/retention
  • Collaborative choreographic projects with targeted, individual feedback
You’ll build
  • Strength, mobility, endurance, and efficient technique
  • Musical phrasing, expressive range, and confident performance
  • Partnering awareness, spacing, and clear transitions to/from the floor
Recommendations
  • Attend one ballet class per week regularly (jazz or conditioning helpful)
  • Uniform: correct class attire; hair off the face
